Relationship between Brazil and the USA requires realism and caution, says Celso Amorim

The President’s special advisor for international affairs, Celso Amorim, stated this Saturday (18) that Brazil is experiencing a moment of optimism in conversations with the United States, after the resumption of dialogue between the two governments amid the tariffs. In an interview with GloboNewshe highlighted, however, that the relationship with the Donald Trump administration must be conducted with “realism” and “caution”.

Amorim assessed that “the ice was broken” and “mutual respect was reestablished”. However, he highlighted that the movements are still just “first steps” towards a possible agreement.

On Friday (17), Amorim participated in a meeting at Palácio da Alvorada alongside Chancellor Mauro Vieira and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The meeting served to evaluate the recent conversation between Vieira and the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in Washington, and prepare a future meeting between Lula and Trump, with no set date yet. The meeting is expected to take place at the end of October.

If schedules allow, the conversation could take place during the Asean summit in Malaysia, scheduled for October 26th to 28th.

Critical minerals on the agenda

One of the central themes of the negotiations will be the exploration of critical minerals and rare earths. Amorim stressed that the government’s priority is to ensure that any negotiations are aligned with Brazilian needs. “The president is aware of this,” he added.

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, is expected to discuss the matter with North American authorities later this month. According to him, Lula instructed the team to maintain international dialogue to attract investments, as long as the parameters of national public policies are respected.
