Residents report executions and point-blank injuries among those killed in Rio

Residents of Complexo da Penha, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, reported signs of summary executions among the dead found after the mega police operation carried out in the region.

According to information from the UOLsome of the bodies — located in a forested area — had gunshots to the back of the head, back and stab marks.

During the early hours of the morning, more than 60 bodies were lined up in São Lucas Square, inside the complex. According to the portal, the dead had visible injuries to their heads and legs. Another six victims were taken by residents in a van to the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital, also in Penha.

The victims were removed from the forest by residents and the Fire Department, without the presence of the Civil Police at the scene.

The transportation was carried out with Civil Defense workers, who began collecting the bodies at around 9 am. Each vehicle has the capacity to transport up to six victims at a time.

Rio’s Medical-Legal Institute (IML) was temporarily closed to exclusively receive the bodies of victims of the operation. According to the Rio Civil Police (PCERJ), other autopsy cases are being transferred to the IML in Niterói.

The operation, called Containment, is the deadliest in the state’s history. To date, the Rio government has recorded 72 deaths, including four police officers.

The operation was launched on Tuesday (28) in the Penha and Alemão complexes, with the aim of dismantling the Comando Vermelho (CV). The action mobilized 2,500 Civil and Military police officers and resulted in clashes that spread across the entire northern zone of Rio.
