Searches for missing Brazilian in Peru for 14 days are suspended

The announcement of suspension of search was made the same day as Edson’s family sent an open letter to Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a request for help. In the document signed by representatives of 18 mountaineering entities, the mountaineer’s relatives asked the Brazilian government to treat the situation as “priority”, send resources to help search and make diplomatic pressure with Peru.

Remember the case

Edson and two other Peruvian mountaineers disappeared during an expedition to the Nevado Artesonraju. The 6,025 meter hill is in Blanca, inside Huascarán National Park. The three were students from the High Mountain Study Center, where they take the aspirant course to the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations.

They should have returned on June 1, but they have not reported their families since the 29th of the previous month, when the expedition began. Rescue teams went to the scene in search of the Brazilian and Efraín Pretel Alonzo, from the city of Huari, and Jesús Huerta Picó, from Caraz, but the area is difficult to reach.

Evidence suggests that the three managed to reach the summit of the mountain. Authorities, Edson’s mountaineers said they saw lights moving on the mountain crest at dawn on May 30. They are suspected that they have had a problem in the descent, as the Route Back of Artesonraju requires four technical rapes.

Tent where the trio should take shelter was found. The equipment was empty, according to the high mountain police.
