Secret US underground base found under ice in Greenland
Designed to be a “city under ice”. The facility consisted of 21 underground tunnels, which stretched for more than two miles.
The base would be equipped with 2,000 firing positionsof which 600 “Iceman” missiles would be launched in the event of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, functioning as a true “revolver carved from ice”.
These missiles would be fired through underground tunnels. According to an academic article entitled “The Iceman Who Never Came”, the project aimed to store the missiles and guarantee substantial attack power.
According to the Washington Post, these 600 missiles would be capable of destroying 80% of US targets in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. However, the military plans behind Project Iceworm were kept secret until 1997, when they were finally revealed. During the construction period, the United States told Danish authorities that the project was of a purely scientific nature, hiding the real military intentions.
The total cost of the project was more than US$25 billion in current values, which corresponds to approximately R$130 billion. However, the facility was decommissioned in 1967 due to the great challenges encountered in building under a constantly moving sheet of ice.
