See what changes in the Federal Highway Police after Bolsonaro’s decision is revoked
The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, signed, last Wednesday (18), an ordinance that takes away the power of investigation from the Federal Highway Police (PRF), a determination that had been defined by a regulation presented in the administration of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The new ordinance defines the rules for the PRF’s participation in joint operations with other bodies of the Unified Public Security System (Susp).
Among the measures, one establishes that the body will not be able to exercise exclusive powers of the judicial police, such as investigating crimes – according to the Federal Constitution, this function falls only to the Civil Police and the Federal Police (PF).

The ordinance also determines that the PRF’s participation in joint operations with other police forces must receive authorization from the corporation’s general director, who will need to explain the reasons for the operation, in addition to detailing the resources that will be used and the costs expected in the action.
In exceptional situations, such as public calamities or serious threats to order, the Minister of Justice and Public Security may also authorize the use of the PRF in cooperation with other Susp bodies.
Current operations will have a period of 90 days to adapt to the new rules, says the ministry.
