Senate advances vote on legalization of casinos, gambling and animal game

Senate President David Alcolumbre (Brazil-AP Union) decided to postpone the vote on the project that legalizes gambling, bingo and casinos. The analysis was scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, 8.

Alcolumbre cited the low quorum and the request made by several senators to be taken from the agenda.

“We have eight or nine senators who are outside Brazil, on an official mission, and I spoke to all of them, who asked this presidency who would like to be on the day of deliberation of this matter,” said Alcolumbre in communication to the plenary.

According to the president of the Senate, there were seven requirements asking for the postponement of the discussion and the vote of the text even before the project analysis began. He also said that the content is “very controversial” and “divides the Senate.”

The proposal has been locked in the Senate since June last year, when it was approved in a tight vote to the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ).

According to the text rapporteur, Irajá (PSD-TO), the strategic break in the vote was necessary to raise sufficient support for the vote in the plenary. The project faces resistance mainly from the evangelical bench.

“Casinos do not generate wealth or companies. Casinos generate money laundering,” said Somos leader Carlos Viana (MG).
