Sinaloa Cartel: Former high-ranking member arrested in the US
At the time, the United States government declared that he was the highest-ranking member of a cartel to voluntarily surrender to authorities.
López Serrano pleaded guilty to trafficking methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine. However, according to the Mexican press, he was released on parole in 2022.
The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in Mexico and was founded by Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán, currently serving a life sentence in the United States.
Culiacán, capital of Sinaloa, has faced a wave of violence since the arrest of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada, another important cartel leader, captured on July 25 in New Mexico, United States.
Zambada, 76, was arrested along with Joaquín Guzmán López, son of “El Chapo” Guzmán. Supposedly, Guzmán’s heir handed over “El Mayo” to authorities seeking legal benefits for himself and a brother who is imprisoned in the same country.
The conflict in Sinaloa pits gunmen loyal to “El Chapo” and his sons against allies of Zambada, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces in a New York court.
