SP government rules out water rationing and bets on preventive measures

The Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of São Paulo, Natália Resende, discarded on Thursday (25) the possibility of water rationing in the state.
The information is from Folha de S. Paulo.

According to her, the management of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) has acted with preventive measures to prevent the adoption of rotation, even in the face of the significant drop in the volume of watersheds.

“The state is much more resilient than in 2014 and 2015,” said Natália, comparing the current situation with the water crisis that marked the past decade.

Warning scenario

On Wednesday (24), the São Paulo government decreed water scarcity in the Basins of Alto Tietê and the Piracicaba River. The latter, which supplies part of the Cantareira system – responsible for supplying water to 9 million people in Greater São Paulo – registered in August 90% below the historical average.

According to the secretary, the scarcity required immediate measures. Sabesp, the state -controlled sanitation company, expanded from 8 to 10 hours a day to reduce water pressure supplied to the population. The strategy aims to avoid losses in the system and has already shown results: “We managed to save 4,200 liters per second, above what we expected,” said Natália.

Procedures and contingency

The National and State Water Agencies have announced that the Cantareira System will go into operation under restriction from October 1st. Natália minimized the impact of the measure, which he classified as “procedural” and necessary whenever there are changes in the volume of reservoirs.

The decision also serves as a basis for contingency measures, such as suspension of new grants in affected basins and increased supervision on water use.
