SP: Senate pre-candidate, Derrite must anticipate departure from the Security Secretariat

São Paulo Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite (PP), should leave office before the legal deadline for disintegration, scheduled for April 2026. The departure, articulated with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), must take place by December this year and will be presented as a strategy for de -federal deputy to be derived in his federal federal.

The information was initially published by S.Paulo Folha and confirmed by Globe. The decision has the support of Progressives, a party to which Derrite recently joined, in an event that was attended by Tarcisio and national right leaders.

Allied close to the governor and already declared a candidate for the Senate, Derrite is also considered by PP sectors as a possible name to the Bandeirantes Palace, if Tarcisio disputes the Presidency of the Republic. Officially, he denies:

– I do not intend to run for the position of governor of the State of São Paulo, because I am 100% aligned with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas. He is a candidate for reelection, has stated this a few times. Being a candidate, I am very happy and honored to have my name, especially nominated by him, to compete for a Senate place in next year’s elections – said Derrite three weeks ago.

If Tarcisio decides to run for presidency, the most likely name to run for the São Paulo government with his support is that of the Secretary of Government and national president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab. Despite the resistance of more conservative sectors in São Paulo, Kassab maintains a good relationship with Derrite, including participating in his PP affiliation and made public praise.

The acceptance of a possible alliance between PP and União Brasil, via federation, will depend on national articulations, which may even include the vacancy of vice in a possible presidential plate of Tarcisio.

The replacement of Derrite is not yet defined, but the most quoted name for the vacancy is Marcello Streifinger, current secretary of Penitentiary Administration. He is seen as a technical staff, with good traffic in the area and without political claim.

In a statement, the government of São Paulo stated that there was no forecast of changes in the Security Secretariat and praised Derrite’s management:

“Since the beginning of the current management, the public security policy in the state has presented concrete results, evidenced by crime indicators. Indexes such as homicides and theft, for example, have historical falls,” the statement says.

Government crises

Derrite’s management was marked by episodes of police violence and controversial statements that generated discomfort within the government, especially in late 2024. Although the rates of homicides and thefts have fallen, police lethality increased.

The crisis intensified with the death of CCP whistleblower Antonio Gritzbach, and other episodes of violence, such as the case in which agents played a man from a bridge.

In December, during an event with Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, and Gilmar Mendes of the Federal Supreme Court, the governor recognized excesses in conducting security:

– We realize that sometimes traditional recipes – ‘Let’s increase the staff, invest in technology, value careers’ – are insufficient. Our speech has weight. And sometimes we were wrong in the speech, we give a wrong direction, which has consequences – said Tarcisio.

Despite tensions, there is a commitment between government allies to deny friction between the secretary and the governor.

“All invention,” said Ciro Nogueira (PP).

On social networks, Derrite himself reaffirmed his alignment with the governor and assumed the possibility of leaving the government before April 2026:

– It is not defined. Yes, there is the possibility (from an early exit), but it would be to resume the mandate of federal deputy, a position for which I was elected.

Interlocutors of the Bandeirantes Palace also minimized the crises. A leadership heard by the GlobeTarcisio would have denied any discomfort with the secretary at a meeting that took place on Saturday.

It is expected that both will walk together in the 2026 elections in a right-wing coalition.
