Tarcisio asks Lula’s connection to Trump; Haddad calls a “naive” charge
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad (PT) classified as “naive” the collection of the governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), so that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) telephone to the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to deal with the 50% surcharge imposed on Brazilian products.
In an agribusiness event on Monday (11), Tarcisio said that high-level meetings between authorities from both countries would not be sufficient to resolve the commercial impasse.
“How many times are we going to have high level meetings in the state department? How many times will we have the connection of the Brazilian president with the American president? This is what will make a difference,” said the governor.

In an interview with GloboNews, Haddad countered: “The governor’s statement is at least a little naive. Perhaps someone who has not yet traquejo in international relations. It doesn’t work like that. When two heads of state are said, there is prior preparation for the meeting or phone call to result in the best trading condition for both countries.”
Resistance in Washington
Haddad stated that, in view of the difficulty in advancing negotiations with the US, the idea that a call would solve the problem ignores the context: “When three ministers – Itamaraty, Farm and Development – they cannot even sit at the table to dialogue, when there is resistance due to the performance of pseudo Brazilians in Washington, I think the governor is being a little naive to imagine that this phone is the key… but not.”
The minister also revealed that the virtual meeting scheduled for Wednesday (13) with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was canceled. According to him, the meeting was unchecked after pressure from far-right groups operating next to the White House.
“The anti-department militancy of these far right forces, who work with the White House, was aware of my speech, acted with some advisors, and the meeting was unmarked,” Haddad said.
