‘Terrifying’: immigrants risk working despite chaos in Los Angeles

“Why does Donald Trump do this?” Asked a Mexican who also managed to escape the operation on Friday.

The man, who emigrated in 1997 and asked not to be identified, questioned the operations that aim at workers, besides the sending of military, as protests heat up on the streets.

“How does Trump send the National Guard to the people, but when they went out to make a mess in the Capitol (in 2021), did not use the National Guard?” He asked, referring to that year’s attack on the headquarters of the US Congress.

“Why does he attack Los Angeles? Because we are a power, because we are the one who moves the economy. (…) This country without the collapse Latinos,” he continued.

Mendía agreed, “This is a country of immigrants,” he said when he remembered Trump’s German roots. “From the president even those who sweep to the streets. Why with us?”
