Thailand Evacua more than 100,000 civilians for confrontation with Cambodia
These fights represent a dramatic climbing in an old dispute between these two neighbors who share 800 km of border and attract millions of foreign tourists each year.
Dozens of kilometers of this border, marked by old temples, remain in dispute. Between 2008 and 2011, clashes between them left 28 dead and tens of thousands of displaced people.
A decision in favor of Cambodia by the UN International Court of Justice (CIJ) resolved this crisis for a decade, but the tension surfaced in May with the death of a Cambodian soldier in a new confrontation.
Thursday’s fighting took place at six distinct points, including two old temples, according to the Thai army.
At the request of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, the UN Security Council will meet this Friday, urgently and to closed doors, to address the conflict.
The United States and France asked for the immediate end of hostilities, while European Union and China showed great concern about the clashes and defended the dialogue.
