The Economist compares Trump to Don Corleone and sees a new global order “mafia”

The British Magazine The Economist He published, on Thursday (27), a cover report in which he compares the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to the character Don Corleone of the classic “The Mighty Boss.”

The publication argues that the Republican is leading a “New World Order,” based on pragmatic and coercion tactics, which would break with the geopolitical balance established since the end of World War II.

Unusual alignment

One of the examples cited by The Economist This week’s vote in the United Nations (UN), in which United States, Russia and North Korea have aligned against a resolution about the war in Ukraine. The position, which contradicted the American diplomatic tradition, was described as an indicative of the new priorities of the White House under Trump.

The magazine argues that this new approach is part of a reconfiguration of international policy, in which powers seek to negotiate directly with each other and pressure smaller countries to accept their conditions.

“A world is quickly approaching in which those who have power do what they want and in which great powers close agreements and intimidate the small ones,” says the report.

Global influence

The article points out that Trump would be focused on agreements that benefit the US economically, even if this implies controversial decisions, as a possible approach to Vladimir Putin.

The report highlights, for example, a mineral exploration agreement in Ukraine, which is expected to be signed on Friday between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at a White House ceremony.

According to The EconomistWashington would have imposed the terms of the agreement to Kiev, taking advantage of the country’s fragility in the face of war. In addition, instead of acting as a mediator in the conflict, the US would have prioritized direct negotiations with Moscow, excluding Ukraine and other European nations.

New Allies

In addition to Putin, the British magazine points out that this new world order would have other protagonists, such as Chinese President Xi Jinping; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; and the German Friedrich Merz, who won the elections in the country and should take over the government.

The publication warns that this new configuration can make the world more unstable, making the US “weaker and more poor” in the long run.
