Thousands of protesters go to the streets against Trump in London
“I just don’t like anything that Trump and his government represent all over the world. (They are) absolutely horrible,” said Bryan Murray, a retiree who attended his wife and held a poster where he read “out Trump.”
Although British Prime Minister Keir Strmer created an unlikely friendship with Trump, the US president still divides public opinion. A YouGov survey showed that 45% think that inviting Trump was a mistake, while 30% considered a hit.
Four people were arrested on Tuesday after images of Trump alongside the sexual criminal Jeffrey Epstein were projected at Windsor castle. The issue may surface during the visit after Stmerer fired his ambassador in the US because of Epstein’s ties last week.
More than 1,600 police officers were mobilized to deal with the protest, which has been peacefully moving toward Parliament and displayed tracks with the words: “It’s not welcome here; it’s not welcome anywhere,” and “Trump, a great setback in man evolution.” According to police, about 5,000 people participated in the protest.
A spokesman for the Stop Trump coalition said the demonstration was a chance to show the government and the world that “the United Kingdom rejects hatred, division and authoritarianism.”
The attendance on Wednesday was similar to that of Trump’s previous state visit in 2019, but much lower than his first official visit to the United Kingdom as president in July 2018, when estimates ranged from tens of thousands and 250,000 people.
