The former head of the Executive was questioned about the alleged coup d’état plan revealed by the Federal Police (PF) and which showed the participation of his allies in the effort to prevent the president’s inauguration Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT)in 2022.

To the newspaper, Bolsonaro stated that he considered declaring a state of siege after Lula’s election, but backtracked after Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), denied the PL’s request to invalidate the votes. “Forget it”, “we lost”, he told the NYT.

When asked about the alleged execution plan of Lula, his deputy, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and Moraes, Bolsonaro said that “on his part”, “there was no attempt to execute the three authorities”.

“Whoever came up with this possible plan must respond,” he said.

The PF indicted the former president and 39 other people, in the investigation into the attempted coup d’état after the 2022 elections. Bolsonaro was indicted for violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état and criminal organization. The three crimes attributed by the corporation to the former president could result in 28 years in prison.

The former president told the American newspaper that he is not worried about the trial of the case. According to him, “my concern is who will judge me.”

Ineligible until 2030

In addition to the alleged coup plot, Bolsonaro commented on the decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that declared him ineligible until 2030. By 5 votes to 2, the Court condemned the former head of the Executive for abuse of political power and misuse of means of communication due to the meeting in which he attacked electronic voting machines in front of diplomats, in July 2022.

The TSE judged that Bolsonaro improperly used the position and administrative structure of the Presidency of the Republic to campaign at the meeting with foreign ambassadors at Palácio do Alvorada.

Bolsonaro characterized the decision as a “violation of democracy” and that he is seeking legal paths to be a candidate in the next elections.

The Electoral Court also condemned Bolsonaro to ineligibility in three actions that attributed to the former president abuse of political power, abuse of economic power and prohibited conduct in the celebrations of September 7, 2022.
