Trump considers it reclassify marijuana after pressure from companies, says Jornal
The measure would facilitate the purchase and sale and boost the industry. Reclassification would reduce restrictions and could generate tax benefits and more medical research.
The industry lobby seeks to resume the agenda started by the Joe Biden management. The former president tried to reclassify marijuana, but could not implement the measure before the end of his term.
Trump is not a traditional marijuana defender. He has already talked about his brother’s addiction and is bothered by the smell of the plant, according to the American newspaper.
Nevertheless, the president is interested in topics with broad popular support. Research indicates that about 80% of the US population supports reclassification. Last year, Trump expressed support for the legalization of marijuana in Florida, but the proposal was narrowly rejected in a state referendum.
The cannabis industry has invested millions to influence Trump. Lobby groups donated to their campaigns and hired lobbyists to advance the dialogue.
Groups contrary to reclassification also make pressure. They argue that change would not benefit young people or the job market.
