Trump contradicts court of appeals after decision and says tariffs
President added that he will appeal the decision to the Supreme Court. According to him, the measure should be maintained because it is the best tool to support US companies.
If allowed, this decision would literally destroy the United States of America. (…) For many years, tariffs have been allowed to be used against us by our foolish politicians. Now, with the help of the Supreme Court of the United States, we will use these resources for the benefit of our nation and will make America rich, strong and powerful again.
Donald Trump, in Post on Truth Social
Understand the case
Court of Appeals declared illegal the reciprocal tariffs imposed by Trump on April 2. By 7 to 4, the judges of the Court of Appeal considered incorrect interpretation of the White House that the 1977 legislation would allow the imposition of tariffs such as Trump imposed them.
Decision determines that reciprocal tariffs are no longer valid on October 14. It is still unclear whether the other rates imposed under the same justification will also be automatically overthrown.
There is currently a lawsuit at the US International Court questioning tariffs about Brazil. The action basically uses the same arguments as the case decided today to ask for its overthrow. In May, the court even overthrew Trump’s fares, but the federal administration managed to keep the tariffs while recalling.
