Trump gives up sending troops to San Francisco after requests from big tech CEOs
United States President Donald Trump canceled the sending of federal immigration agents to San Francisco, just as they were beginning to gather at a Coast Guard base in the “Bay Area”, as the San Francisco Bay Area is known.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he halted the federal action in San Francisco at the request of friends who live in the Bay Area and who praised the work of the city’s Democratic mayor, Daniel Lurie. Trump specifically cited Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, who caused controversy locally by initially saying he wanted the National Guard in San Francisco, and Jensen Huang, chairman and CEO of Nvidia.

Inflation and a tough job market are making it harder for some people to pay off the car loans they took out in better times.

“The federal government was preparing to ‘intensify’ its presence in San Francisco, California, on Saturday, but friends of mine who live in the area called me last night asking me not to proceed with the intensification as the mayor, Daniel Lurie, was making substantial progress,” Trump said.

Lurie said in a statement that Trump told him of the reversal in a call Wednesday night. He said the two talked about the recent drop in crime in San Francisco, the return of tourists after the pandemic and the city’s growing artificial intelligence industry.
“In that conversation, the president told me clearly that he was canceling any plans for federal action in San Francisco,” Lurie said in the statement. “Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reaffirmed that decision in our conversation this morning.”
It was not immediately clear whether this meant the Trump administration had canceled the entire planned U.S. Customs and Border Protection operation for the entire Bay Area region, or just for San Francisco.
Protesters gathered Thursday morning outside Coast Guard Island, the installation in Alameda, California, across the Bay from San Francisco that would be used as an operations center for the action. Members of the group attempted to block cars from entering the base, including at least two Border Patrol vehicles.
Lurie, a political newcomer and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, has avoided talking about national politics since being inaugurated in January, saying he prefers to focus on local issues. He has not even mentioned the name “Trump” in public.
“San Francisco is on the rise,” Lurie said Thursday. “We appreciate the president understanding that we are the global technology hub, and when San Francisco is strong, our country is strong.”
