Trump imposes 30% rates on European Union and Mexico
The decision reveals a radically different treatment to what the White House guaranteed to the British, with an understanding of opening markets. Trump, however, has repeatedly criticized the EU and its barriers to American goods.
Mexico sees ‘unfair treatment’
Already in a letter to the government of Claudia Scheinbaum, Mexico, the US president signaled that, once again, she linked the commercial issue with political decisions. In the document, Trump states that “the United States imposed fares to deal with the Fentanil crisis in our country, caused in part by Mexico’s failure to prevent cartels, formed by the most negligible people who have ever passed the Earth, to divert these drugs in our country.”
Mexico has helped me protect the border, but what Mexico has done is not enough. Mexico has not yet stopped the cartels trying to turn all North America into a drug trafficking amusement park. Obviously, I can’t allow this to happen! From August 1, 2025, we will charge Mexico a 30% rate on Mexican products sent to the United States, separated from all sectoral tariffs

“In addition, I must mention that Fentanil’s flow is not the only challenge we have with Mexico, which has many tariff policies and commercial barriers that cause unsustainable commercial deficits against the United States. The commercial deficit is a great threat to our economy and, in fact, our national security,” Trump warned.
Trump is still complete with a requirement: “If Mexico is successful in challenging cartels and stopping the flow of fentanyl, we will consider this letter adjustment. These tariffs can be modified, up or down, depending on our relationship with your country. You will never be disappointed with the United States of America,” he said.
