Trump raises tariff over China to 125% and fixes 10% for too much
“At some point, I hope that in the near future, China will realize that US and other countries’ theft days are no longer sustainable or acceptable,” he wrote.
White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt said the tariff level would be reduced to 10% to the rest of the world – which would mean an important reduction.
“On the other hand, and based on the fact that more than 75 countries have called representatives from the United States, including trade, treasure and USTR departments, to negotiate a solution to issues that are being discussed in relation to commerce, commercial barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation and non -monetary tariffs, and that these countries did not, by my strong suggestion, retained in any way, form or way against the United States, I authorized a 90 -day break and a substantially reduced reciprocal tariff during this period of 10%, also with immediate effectiveness, “he added.
The tactic was considered a maneuver to try to divide governments around the world, preventing the creation of a wide coalition against the United States. Trump, however, did not mention the names of the countries that contacted. The pause refers only to reciprocal tariffs and not to steel or cars rates.
The measure was interpreted by Financial Market Observers as a Trump retreat gesture in the face of the collapse of the scholarships and the pressure of great American entrepreneurs. Hours earlier, he had celebrated the entry into force of tariffs and summoned the private sector to an investor in the US.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent denied that the turnaround is related to the pressure of the markets. The Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, indicated that “the world is ready to work with President Trump to pack globally, and China opted for the opposite direction.”
