Trump speaks of a global fare of 15% to 20%; Brazil still without definition
Four days of the deadline for commercial tariffs in force on August 1, Trump announced agreements with only seven governments. They are: European Union, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, United Kingdom and China.
How is Brazil?
The situation in Brazil remains indefinite, even though it is one of the most impacted countries with a 50%tariff. In a decisive week, the government of President Lula (PT) has not yet made relevant advances in attempted negotiation with Washington.
Planalto negotiations remain locked. The Federal Government’s economic team says it has already sent two proposals to revert the 50% tariff over all national exports to the US. No response from the White House, Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, arrived in New York today in the hope of unlocking negotiations.
Given the impasse, the immediate departure has been to prepare a contingency plan. Last week, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said measures to mitigate the economic impact to be analyzed by Lula include credit lines for affected sectors.
Alckmin talked to the US Secretary of Commerce. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) meeting with US Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, was classified as productive. “A long conversation, which I understand important, putting all points and highlighting Brazil’s interest in negotiation,” he reported, who leads negotiations as Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services.
