Trump’s request to China about soy is offensive against Brazil, says Celso Amorim
Presidency special advisor Celso Amorim pointed out that Donald Trump’s recent movement in relation to China surpasses the field of traditional commercial dispute and assumes hostile contours to Brazil.
The US President would have asked Beijing to quadruple the purchase of soy from the United States, which, in Amorim’s assessment, would mean “almost a state of war” against Brazilian interests.

In an interview with the Roda Viva program, from TV Culturaon Monday (11), Amorim stressed that China will hardly abandon the strategic partnership with Brazil, but defended the maintenance of permanent dialogue channels. For him, the American proposal does not result from competitive gain, but of deliberate use of political and economic pressure.

Soy is one of the main items exported by Brazil to the Chinese market and supports much of the country’s agricultural trade balance. A reduction in this demand would have a direct effect on the sector and, consequently, on the national economy.
Trump’s request was made a few hours before the United States extended the tariff truce with Beijing for 90 days. Without extension, US tariffs on Chinese products would be valid again on Monday (11).
Amid the tensions climbing, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) called on Monday night to Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the request of the Brazilian government itself. According to interlocutors, the conversation focused on the tariff war imposed by the United States.
