US opens new military front in the Pacific and challenges Latin America
Meanwhile, the deployment of destroyers, F-35 fighters and “Night Stalkers” helicopters in the Caribbean fuels fears of intervention in Venezuela. The White House denies its intention to overthrow Nicolás Maduro, but analysts see the move as psychological warfare to force a political transition.
Pressure on Argentina: the conditioned “rescue”
Trump also expanded the economic arm of regional pressure. The president conditioned an aid package on US$40 billion to Argentina — half in swap exchange rate, half in line of credit — to Javier Milei’s electoral success in the upcoming mid-term elections.
“If he loses, America won’t be around for long,” Trump said. The threat provoked outrage in Buenos Aires: former minister Jorge Taiana accused the American of “extorting the Argentine people”, and the slogan #HomelandOrColônia went viral on the networks. Analysts classify the gesture as interference and resonance of an old colonialism.
The specter of authoritarianism and war at home
In a trenchant editorial, The Washington Post criticized the agreement between the University of Virginia and the Trump administration, which suspended investigations into diversity, equity and inclusion policies. The pact frees the institution from fines, but obliges it to follow the White House’s controversial interpretation of civil rights laws. For the newspaper, the decision should alarm defenders of affirmative action: although the plurality of perspectives on campuses is essential, it cannot be “micromanaged by bureaucrats”.
