US Senator proposes law that offers rewards for those who report illegal immigrants
“Anyone who makes a report that leads to the arrest of an illegal alien will receive a reward of $1,000,” says bill SB72, which will be debated in the new legislative session cycle starting in January.
The goal is to “find and detain illegal aliens in this state,” but only people “licensed” as bail bonds agents or sureties can participate in the program.
The project has generated intense controversy since it came to light last week. Some accuse him of taking President-elect Donald Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric to the extreme, as he promises to carry out the largest deportation operation of undocumented migrants in US history.
– “Protect yourself” –
The state senator defended his proposal. “Bill 72 will allow our police and our communities to finally protect themselves,” he said in a video on social media.
The initiative is reminiscent of other strict laws against irregular immigrants. Texas passed a rule to detain and even expel migrants who illegally crossed the border with Mexico, but the US Supreme Court temporarily suspended its implementation.
