US warship leaves Trinidad after training near Venezuela
A United States destroyer ship left a port in Trinidad and Tobago this Thursday (30), just over 10 kilometers from the coast of Venezuela, amid the military mobilization ordered by Washington for its anti-drug operation in the Caribbean, AFP journalists found.
Washington accuses the Venezuelan government of leading a drug cartel and, since August, has launched an anti-drug operation in the Caribbean and the Pacific, killing at least 62 suspected drug traffickers in 16 attacks on vessels, the legality of which has been questioned internationally.
The government of Trinidad and Tobago openly demonstrated its support for these operations, which generated tension with Venezuela. The confrontation intensified this Sunday, when Port of Spain received the warship USS Gravely for military exercises in the archipelago, which Caracas considers a “provocation” with the aim of inciting a “war”.
