USA and Iran resume discussions about the Iranian nuclear program
Iran and the United States have not negotiated since 2015. But last week Araqchi and Witkoff exchanged messages briefly at the end of an initial session of conversations in Oman.
Trump emptied agreement
The international community fears that Iran, through its uranium enrichment program, is trying to build an atomic bomb. Tehran rejects the accusations and defends his right to nuclear development for civil purposes, such as energy generation.
In 2015, after years of negotiation, an agreement was signed with the international community. At the time, Tehran had agreed to reduce his nuclear activities in exchange for the relief of economic sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic. But in 2018, during his first term, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from a commitment and since then efforts to resume dialogue failed.
Tehran fulfilled the agreement until Washington’s withdrawal, but then began to detach from his commitments. Since then, efforts to resume the 2015 agreement have failed.
Nuclear bomb “is not far away”
The body responsible for verifying the peaceful character of the program is AIEA, whose director general visited Tehran this week. Before the trip, Argentine diplomat Rafael Grossi said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde that Iran “is not far from getting the nuclear weapon. “We are in a crucial phase of important negotiations. We know we have little time,” Grossi said in Tehran.
