“The dignity of Colombia and Latin America come first. Migrants are human beings and subjects of rights and should be treated as such,” said Petro. He also expressed concern about the possible freezing of the dialogue over Darién, a key region in the migratory flow that is between Panama and Colombia.
Petro also defended the creation of regularization mechanisms. “If there is no regularization, illegal immigration will increase. We saw this when the US blocked Venezuela and caused the explosion of the migratory wave,” he wrote.
On Thursday (23), the Government of Mexico also took similar measures, creating a tension with Trump.
Days before the Republican’s inauguration, Latin America governments gathered to close a joint position against attitudes that may harm their nationals. In a statement signed by Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and other countries, it was asked that there was no “criminalization of immigration”, as well as guarantees that everyone would be treated properly.
