‘We urgently have to remed Europe,’ says head of the European Commission
We really have to position ourselves massively. (…) Now it is extremely important to intensify the investment in defense for a prolonged period of time. It is for the safety of the European Union, and we need, in the geostrategic environment in which we live, prepare for the worst and therefore reinforce the defenses. Ursula von der Leyen
Asked about the US, von der Leyen said EU is ready to “defend democracy.” She also defended the “principle that there is a rule of law, which (says) you cannot invade and intimidate your neighbor, nor change borders with strength.”
United Kingdom Prime Minister also came out in defense of Ukraine after a meeting. At the departure of the meeting, Keir Strmer told the press that “several countries” indicated that they want to be part of Europe’s planned “coalition” to help Ukraine, without naming which nations involved in the agreement would be.
For Stmerer, Europe is in the ‘Crossroads of History’ and needs to support Ukraine. British Premier said, however, that any lasting peace plan for the region needs to involve US security guarantees. Yesterday, he announced a $ 16 billion financial support plan to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Regarding the coalition of the will, yes, several countries indicated today that they want to be part of the plan we are developing. (…) I will let them make their own statements about how exactly they want to make this contribution, but we can move on with it. Keir Strmer, UK Prime Minister
Summit gathered in London
Governments from 16 countries have met today with the European Union and NATO to establish bases of a unit on the defense of the continent. United Kingdom and France had already announced that they would work on a peace plan with Kiev to introduce him to the US after the discussion between Trump and Zelensky. The summit thus became a response to Trump’s attacks against Ukraine.
