“What seemed impossible is no longer,” says Lula about a meeting with Trump
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday that he hopes for the success of his relationship with US President Donald Trump and said he was optimistic that the two may restore the necessary harmony between Brazil and the US.
Saying “satisfied” with the quick conversation he had with Trump on Tuesday after making his opening speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, Lula confirmed the possibility of a meeting between the two in the coming days.
“I was pleased to have a meeting with President Trump. What seemed impossible is no longer impossible and it happened. I was happy when he said … He painted a good chemistry between us,” Lula said in an interview at UN headquarters in New York, adding that “painted a chemistry.”

“Since I think the human relationship is 80% chemical and 20% emotion, I think this relationship is very important and I hope it works, because Brazil and the United States are the two largest democracies on the continent,” said Lula, citing areas of mutual interest in the business, commercial, industrial, technological and digital sector, among others.
Trump was surprised by stating, during his UN speech on Tuesday, that he had met Lula briefly behind the scenes and had enjoyed the Brazilian, in a tone change after months of disagreement between them due to the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro and other themes.
Trump stated that the Brazilian president was a pleasant man and that they would talk next week.
Asked about the possible meeting, Lula said there is nothing marked yet, but said that, returning to Brazil, he will put his team in contact with the White House to see the possibilities.
The president said he would have no problem with a face -to -face meeting with Trump, although the Brazilian chancellor, Mauro Vieira, said that it is most likely to be a video conferencing or a phone call.
“For me it can be face -to -face. Then we have to discuss what the meeting will be like. As we will not discuss any secret secret, it can be public,” said Lula.
Advisors of the president remember the cases of Ukraine presidents, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, who were embarrassed by Trump in the White House, which leaves Brazilian diplomacy fear of a face -to -face meeting.
Asked what could be placed on the table in a conversation with the American, Lula said that “everything can be put on the table,” but warned that issues of sovereignty-such as the Bolsonaro trial-are not under discussion, as they would not be with any other government.
“I hope that in a conversation of two heads of state let’s put on the table what our differences are and make decisions,” he said. “I am convinced that some decisions made by President Trump has due to the fact that he has the quality of information about Brazil. By the time he has the correct information he can change his position quietly.”
Trump imposed a 50% rate on US imports from many Brazilian products to combat what he called “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for trying a blow to stay in power after being defeated by Lula in the 2022 elections.
