Who is Márcia Lopes? Get to know the profile of the new minister of women
Former Minister of Social Development of the second term of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Márcia Lopes, 67, was announced on Monday, 5, to the post of Minister of Women, in place of Cida Gonçalves.
Graduated in Social Work from the State University of Londrina (UEL), Márcia Lopes has been affiliated with PT since 1982. Social worker for training, Minister has worked as a university professor for 30 years since 1981, in parallel to public life.

Marcia’s trajectory in the public service began in Londrina, where she was appointed in 1993 as the municipal secretary of Social Assistance. He stayed at the post until 1996. In Paraná, he also served as the Municipal Councilor of Social Assistance and the Rights of Children and Adolescents in Londrina and State Social Assistance Counselor of the State for two administrations.
In 2000, he applied and was elected Londrina councilwoman by the PT. He fulfilled only one term and did not try to reelection. Eight years after leaving Veronça, Marcia disputed in 2012 the City Hall of Londrina for the PT and took third place in the first round, with 38,484 votes (14.08%).
At the federal level, he was National Secretary of Social Assistance of the Ministry of Social Development and Hunger Fighting, in 2004, executive secretary of the portfolio, from 2005 to 2007, and minister in 2010.
Specializing in the area of Children and Adolescents and with a master’s degree in Social Work from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), Marcia Lopes was a national counselor of Social Assistance and the Rights of Children and Adolescents of the National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (Conanda). He also worked as president of the Inter -American Development Bank (IDB) poverty and social protection network in 2007.
It was announced in November 2022 by the then vice president elected and coordinator of the transition, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), to coordinate the area of social assistance during the transition government. He is the sister of Gilberto Carvalho, former Chief Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil in the government of Dilma Rousseff.
