who is the clan that threatens Hamas’s power in Gaza
Supposed alliance with Israel. As it is a rival to Hamas, rumors arose that the Israeli government had offered support to the clan. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Nizar Doghmsuh said he had refused an alleged proposal from the Israeli military to manage a “humanitarian zone” in the region controlled by the group.
Israel has a history of supporting groups that antagonize Hamas. According to Al Jazeera, one of the militias allegedly assisted by Israel would be the Popular Forces, operating in Gaza, and led by Yasser Abu Shabab. It is noteworthy that these rumors were never recognized by the Jewish state.
Executions
Tensions between Hamas and Doghmush flared after the fragile ceasefire agreement to end the war in Gaza. In an attempt to maintain control of Palestinian territory, Hamas has carried out public executions of alleged traitors and members of rival clans who also dispute control of the region.
Clashes have left at least 27 people dead since the ceasefire, according to the BBC. The deaths occurred after a Hamas operation to arrest members of the rival clan. The clash reportedly resulted in the murder of 19 members of Doghmush and eight of Hamas.
