The criticism was partly motivated by the sanction in January of a law that allows the government to take private lands without compensation, when the measure is considered “fair and public interest”.
However, the government states that no land has been confiscated so far on this law.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has denied the accusation that Africanderes are persecuted.
“A refugee is someone who has to leave his country for fear of political, religious or economic persecution,” said Ramaphosa. “They don’t fit this category.”
Gregory Meeks, the main democrat in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the granting of asylum to South Africans “is not just a racist sign, it is a reinterpretation of politically motivated history.”
