Zelensky says he will only negotiate about war directly with Putin
Putin proposed on Sunday direct conversations with Ukraine, after ignoring a Ukrainian proposal for the 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Trump then said publicly to Zelensky to accept.
The Ukrainian leader then stated that he was waiting for Putin in Istanbul on Thursday, although the Kremlin head never made it clear that he intended to travel in person.
“President Zelensky will not meet with any other Russian representative in Istanbul except Putin,” Ukrainian presidential advisor Mykhailo Podilyak told Reuters.
His cabinet chief Andriy Yermak said Zelensky’s trip to Turkey shows that Kiev is ready for conversations, but repeated Ukraine’s position that any negotiation should occur after a ceasefire.
“Our position is based on principles and very strong,” Yermak said at a Copenhagen conference.
Moscow did not say if Putin will travel to Türkiye.
