STF starts judgment of the complaint against the third core of the attempted coup

The first class of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) begins to judge on Tuesday, 20, the complaint offered by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) against another nucleus that is part of the inquiry of the coup.

The “core 3”, accused of planning “tactical actions” to effect the coup, is composed of military and reserve military military and a federal police.

The role of the military in the alleged plot of coup, according to the complaint of PGR

They are: Bernardo Romão Correa Netto (colonel); Cleverson Ney Magalhães (reserve colonel); Estevam Cals Theóphilo Gaspar de Oliveira (Reserve General); Fabrício Moreira de Bastos (Colonel); Hélio Ferreira Lima (Lieutenant Colonel); Márcio Nunes de Resende Júnior (Colonel); Nilton Diniz Rodrigues (General); Rafael Martins de Oliveira (Lieutenant Colonel); Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo (Lieutenant Colonel); Ronald Ferreira de Araújo Júnior (Lieutenant Colonel); Sérgio Ricardo Cavaliere de Medeiros (Lieutenant Colonel); and Wladimir Matos Soares (Federal Police Agent).

The president of the first class, Minister Cristiano Zanin, reserved three sessions for the trial: on the 20th, at 9:30 am and at 14h, and on the 21st, at 9:30 am. After reading the complaint, the lawyers will submit the defenses and, after that, the five ministers of the board will decide whether or not the 12 reported.

Who are the accused

Bernardo Romão Correa Netto is a colonel of the army. According to the Federal Police (PF) report, Correa Neto was a “trusted man” of the former Bolsonaro orders of Bolsonaro Mauro Cid and was involved in planning the coup. He would have been the intermediary of a meeting between military personnel planning a coup measure in November 2022, shortly after the former president’s defeat in the elections.

Cleverson Ney Magalhães is Lieutenant Colonel and former Operations Command Operations (Coter). The elements of the investigation indicate that General Estevam Theóphilo had the support of Colonel Cleverson Ney Magalhães, his assistant at the Coter. The military was responsible for organizing a meeting to discuss with the “black kids” the preparatory acts for the intervention.

Estevam Theóphilo is the army general. Investigations point out that he would have used the high patent he had to “influence and incite support for other acting nuclei through the endorsement of measures to be adopted to consummate the coup.” The former chief of the Coter was part of the high-ranking officers with influence and support to the other five nuclei of the group investigated by the PF.

Fabrício Moreira de Bastos is army colonel. Fabrício, according to the PF, is one of the authors of the open letter seeking to raise support for the coup between armed forces officers. In addition, according to the investigation, he was responsible for the agency of “black kids” willing to the intention. At the time of the investigated facts, he acted at the Army Intelligence Center.

Hélio Ferreira is former commander of the 3rd Special Forces Company in Manaus. He was deprived of his position in February 2024 during investigations into undemocratic plans related to former President Jair Bolsonaro. When summoned to testify to the Federal Police about his alleged connection with the coup, he chose to remain silent. Training in special operations, he is a member of the Army Elite Group known as “Black Kids”, specializing in high -risk sensitive missions.

Márcio Nunes de Resende Júnior is army colonel. It was caught by the PF in the group conversations of WhatsApp of the coup planning. He commanded the 1st Jungle Logistics Battalion. Also from the Special Forces, he was in the army’s staff when he participated in the WhatsApp group, where he currently occupies the Permanent Commission for Classified Documents Evaluation (CPADC).

Nilton Diniz Rodrigues is a colonel of the army, was promoted to the general of the land force. He was an assistant to General Freire Gomes, then army commander, and would have tried to convince him to join the coup. According to PF, Nilton was “responsible for articulating and marking the meeting held on November 28, 2022, in Brasilia, which was intended to perform actions aimed at pressuring the army commanders to join the coup”.

Rafael Martins de Oliveira. The Army Lieutenant Colonel made up the group of military personnel called “Black Kids” and participated in the elaboration of the coup plan presented in November 2022 at the house of General Walter Braga Netto. One of his tasks was to monitor the actions of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF), who would be murdered if the scammers were successful.

Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo is Lieutenant Colonel of the Army. According to the PF, the criminal group used anonymization techniques in an attempt to hide the real owners of tracked phones. “Cold phones”, according to the investigation, are purchased and registered with data from others to make it difficult or prevent identification. One of these lines was recorded by Lieutenant Colonel Rodrigo Bezerra 14 days after the action that intended to kidnap and execute Minister Alexandre de Moraes, on December 29, 2022.

Ronald Ferreira de Araújo Júnior, Lieutenant Colonel of the Army, was one of the authors of the “Letter to the Army Commander of Superior Officers of the Brazilian Army active”, a manifesto in which the criminal group summons high-ranking military personnel to adhere to the coup intent. The officer also acted in the collection of signatures for the document.

Sérgio Ricardo Cavaliere de Medeiros, Colonel of the Army, collected subscriptions from military to the “letter to the army commander of higher officers of the Brazilian Army active”, in which the group called for high patent officers to join the coup plan. The manifesto would be intentionally leaked by influencer Paulo Figueiredo, grandson of João Paulo Figueiredo, president of Brazil during the military dictatorship.

Wladimir Matos Soares, Federal Police Officer, provided information about the security of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to the coup group. He even informed the then personal advisor of Jair Bolsonaro Sérgio Cordeiro the location of Sergeant Misael Melo da Silva, who was part of the petista’s team. Soares also demonstrated through messages willing to actively participate to prevent the transition of power. “My team and I have all the equipment ready to help to defend the palace and the president. Just the cannada leave!”.

Who has already been judged

The PGR told the complaint of scam attempt in five nuclei. So far, the ministers of the first class have judged and accepted the complaints against “core 1” or “crucial core”, of which former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and close allies are part of “nucleus 2” or “nucleus of management” and “core 4”, accused of acting in production and dissemination of misinformation and attacks on the electoral system

On March 26, Bolsonaro and seven others became defendants for attempted coup. Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case, voted to accept the complaint of the PGR, and was followed by Flávio Dino, Luiz Fux, Cármen Lúcia and Cristiano Zanin, president of the collegiate. This group is considered the “crucial core” of the coup attempt, as “the main decisions and social impact actions left” for the conspiracy.

In addition to Bolsonaro, General Walter Braga Netto (former Minister of Defense and Civil House), General Augusto Heleno (former Minister of the Institutional Security Office), Deputy Alexandre Ramagem (former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency), Anderson Torres (former Minister of Justice), Admiral Almir Garnier (former Navy Commander), General Paulo Sérgio Nogueira) and Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid (former Presidency Orders).

At the trial of “Center 2”, on April 22, the ministers also accepted the complaint and made defendants the six members of the group: Fernando de Sousa Oliveira, Filipe Garcia Martins, Marcelo Costa Câmara, Marília Ferreira de Alencar, Mário Fernandes and Silvinei Vasques. This group is considered the “Core of Management”, as all members had “relevant professional positions” in the government and “managed the actions” coup, according to PGR.

The “core 4” of the alleged coup plot, accused of acting in the production and dissemination of misinformation and attacks on the electoral system, is composed by Ailton Gonçalves Moraes Barros, Ângelo Martins Denicoli, Carlos César Moretzsohn Rocha, Giancarlo Gomes Rodrigues, Guilherme Marques de Almeida, Marcelo Araújo Bormevet and Reginaldo Vieira de Abreu. The STF accepted the complaint on May 6 this year.

Core 5

The “core 5” of the complaint is composed only by the former presenter of young Pan Paulo Figueiredo. Grandson of General João Batista Figueiredo, last president of the military dictatorship, he was denounced in the coup survey three months ago, but has not yet defended himself in the process.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) pointed out that Figueiredo used his “ability to penetrate the military” in radio and TV programs to amplify “personal (against general) attacks and increase adhesion (to the coup).”
