Leila Barros says she will not accept Marina’s call to return to the Senate

The leader of the Senate Women’s Bench, Leila Barros (PDT-DF), said on Tuesday afternoon, 27 she will not accept the convening of the Environment Minister, Marina Silva, by the Infrastructure Commission.

In the morning, the minister, who had been invited to attend the committee, left the meeting after a series of discussions with opposition parliamentarians. After the episode, Senators argued that Marina was summoned to return to the board.

“Call will not have, no. We will do an auê inside and there will be no call. There were people who played worse here and no one called for call,” said the PDT senator. “There will be no convening from Marina because we are going to make a national mobilization if you have a call, here, any woman who was treated as she treated today,” he said.

At the public hearing to discuss the creation of conservation units in the equatorial margin, Marina was charged for the delay in the release of environmental licenses. Senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM) said that “the woman deserves respect, the minister does not.” Marina demanded an apology to continue, but was not answered.

At another point in the debate, the committee chairman, Senator Marcos Rogério (PL-RO), complained about the minister’s stance and cut her microphone. According to the senator, Marina was “provoking”. At the most tense moment of the discussion, the PL senator told the minister “if for his place.” Marina reacted, “I would like me to be a submissive woman, I’m not.”

Marina Silva, who participated as guest, said that, in the face of the scenario, he would withdraw. The president of the collegiate said that in the next session, he will guide the convening of Marina to resume the debate.

The case reverberated at the session in the plenary and several senators spoke upon the incident. The leader of the women’s bench reported listening carefully to the senators’ opinions and stated that, without Marina’s presence, the tone of the statements was different from that directed to the minister during the hearing at the committee.

“When they say ‘oh, Minister Marina was altered’, guys, put yourself in the place of a person who arrives at the commission in which she is invited, a minister who has been a senator of the Republic, who knows the rites of this house very well. She is invited to deal with questions from her folder, environment, and starts to be attacked. What kind of reaction do you want from a woman who feels cornered?”, Asked Leila Barros.

Following the speech of the female bench leader, Senator Soraya Thronicke (Somos-MS) also expressed her solidarity to the minister. For the parliamentarian, it is a matter of education.

“We need to improve female participation in politics. It is necessary to balance between us and, above all, female participation,” said the senator.

Still in the plenary, Senator Teresa Leitão (PT-PE) pointed to the phrase said by Marcos Rogério as “the suprasum of machismo.” She stated that the treatment of men and women in politics is very unequal and reiterated that the place of women is neither private nor domestic, far from public space and public policy formulation.
