Datafolha: Most supports visa from Moraes and measures against Bolsonaro

The revocation of the visa for the United States of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, his family members and other members of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), determined by the Government of Donald Trump, is approved by 47% of Brazilians, according to a survey Datafolha released on Friday (1st). Another 42% disapprove of the measure, driven by Secretary of State Marco Rubio as part of a political offensive against the Brazilian judiciary.

Although it does not represent absolute majority, support for retaliation against Moraes numerically exceeds the rejection rate and reveals a sense of distrust of the electorate in relation to the Supreme Court.

Income clippings and ideological profile help to understand this division: Approval of visa revocation reaches 58% in the lower middle class and 66% among declared scholarships, while among Lula voters the index drops to 32%.

The data, however, contrasts with another survey by the same institute, which pointed 55% of support for precautionary measures imposed on former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), including the use of an electronic anklet and the ban on leaving his residence at night and on weekends.

That is, the electorate is divided as to the role of the judiciary, but also adheres to the punishment on both sides of the crisis – albeit in different proportions and contexts.

The survey was conducted on July 29 and 30, before the crisis scaled with the United States, which reached a new level with the inclusion of Moraes in Magnitsky Law, an American mechanism that allows unilateral sanctions for alleged human rights violations.

The Trump government accuses the minister of “political persecution” against Bolsonaro, who is defendant for attempted coup in the trial scheduled for September.

Datafolha heard 2,004 people over 16 years old in 130 municipalities. The margin of error is two percentage points.
