Tarcísio: First act, if I am president, will be granting pardon to Bolsonaro

The governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), said that his first measure becomes president of the Republic would be to grant a pardon to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

He was asked if he would grant the pardon in an interview with the Greater ABC Diary, published on Friday, 29. “At the time. First act. Because I think all that is happening is absolutely disarmed,” he said.

He again denied the intention of running for the presidency in 2026. “I am not a presidential candidate, I will make it very clear. Every governor of Sao Paulo is presidential, due to the size of the state, a very important state. But we will take the recent history of Sao Paulo who became president of the Republic: the last was Jânio Quadros and the penultimate was Washington Luís,” he said.

Tarcisio also said that he does not trust the courts and that he does not see elements for the conviction of Bolsonaro, who begins to be tried for an attempt to coup next Tuesday in the Supreme Federal Court (STF). “I do not believe in elements for him to be convicted, but unfortunately today I can not say that I trust in justice, for everything we have seen,” he said.

The governor also defended the amnesty to those convicted of attempted coup d’état and the “prerogative” of Congress to build a “political solution.” “We have been talking to parties, I believe in a political exit via Congress, and Congress has to have its prerogative respected to build a political solution. This solution (amnesty) is not new, was present in other moments of Brazil,” he said, citing episodes from revolts from the colonial period to the “64 movement”.

In the interview, Tarcisio still charged the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), to which the amnesty guide. He did not mention Motta nominally. “I understand that the presidents of the house have to submit this to the will of the plenary, and cannot have interference from another power.”
