Senator proposes “National Day of Shame” in reference to Bolsonaro's trial

Senator Magno Malta (PL-ES) presented on Tuesday (2) a bill that creates the “National Day of Shame”, to be celebrated on September 2-the date on which Jair Bolsonaro (PL) trial began in the Supreme Court (STF).

For him, the criminal action involving the former president and seven other defendants for the attempted coup d’état is just a process marked by political motivations.

“It is an invitation to look at the recent past with honesty, recognize mistakes made and strengthen commitment to truth, justice and democracy,” the parliamentarian said in a statement.

The text will be initially analyzed in Senate commissions before going to plenary vote. If approved, the date will join the country’s official calendar.

Public hearing in the Senate

On the same day, Magno Malta attended the hearing of the Public Security Commission that heard the computational expert Eduardo Tagliaferro, former advisor to Minister Alexandre de Moraes at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

TagliaFerro accused the magistrate of alleged procedural fraud by authorizing search and seizure against Bolsonaro supporters in 2022, based on reports, and only later attach the legal reasoning.

The hearing took place in parallel to the trial in the first class of the Supreme Court, which analyzes Bolsonaro and seven other defendants accused of joining the “crucial core” of the coup plot. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) accuses the group of five crimes, including attempted coup and violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law.
