Haddad says he will present Lula with several alternatives after the tax MP expires
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said this Thursday that he will present several alternative measures to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after the defeat suffered by the government in the Chamber of Deputies the day before with the loss of validity of the provisional measure that removed tax exemption from financial investments.
In an interview with journalists upon arriving at the Ministry of Finance in Brasília, Haddad stated that the reduction in tax spending is a constitutional determination and that a decision by the Federal Supreme Court that reestablished a decree by Lula on the Tax on Financial Operations (IOF) after Congress voted to revoke it gives “comfort” to the Executive to reach the end of the year.
Lula says he will discuss next week how the financial system will pay “due taxes”
The government suffered a harsh defeat in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday with the approval of a request that removed Provisional Measure 1303 from the agenda.
