British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “horrible” and “deeply worrying.”

“My thoughts are with everyone affected, and my thanks to the emergency services for their response,” he added in a post on X.

The police went to the scene after receiving the alert at around 7:40 pm local time (4:40 pm Brasília time), and the train was stopped in Huntingdon, a town in the Cambridge region.

Rail company London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said all its lines were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

LNER, which provides rail services in the east of England and Scotland, urged passengers to avoid traveling and warned of “significant disruption”.

Witnesses interviewed by The Times newspaper indicated that they saw a man armed with a large knife and passengers hiding in the train’s bathrooms to protect themselves. One of them said she saw “blood everywhere.”
