Senator Eliziane Gama exchanges PSD for PT and reinforces support for Lula

Senator Eliziane Gama left the PSD and joined the PT this Thursday (2) to support the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

In a post on social media, Eliziane wrote: “Today I begin a new cycle alongside President Lula, who invited me and personally endorsed my membership in the PT.” In another publication, the senator stated that she ends her cycle in the PSD grateful “for the learning and respectful coexistence”.

The move takes place less than ten days after the party president, Gilberto Kassab, announced the choice of the former governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado, as candidate for President.

End of the party window

The window for party change and party disaffiliation began in March and ends this Saturday (4). Only during this period can parliamentarians change parties without risk of losing their mandate. As of Sunday (5), candidates who choose to change their acronym may have their mandate revoked, according to the rules of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

This occurs because it is understood that the parliamentarian was elected with the structure and resources of the party and, in practice, the Electoral Court considers that the seat belongs to the party, and not to the person holding the position. The exception exists because the period occurs in the last year of the mandate, when legislative activity is usually reduced due to the electoral calendar. In this scenario, the change of party tends to generate less impact for the affected party.
