Eleven governors resign to contest October elections
The deadline for public agents who will participate in the elections to leave their positions ended this Saturday (4). The rule is called non-compatibilization and applies to governors, mayors and state ministers who intend to run for office in the October election.
With the end of the term, 11 governors left their positions to run for other positions.
Ronaldo Caiado (PSD-GO) announced, last week, that he is a pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. Romeu Zema (Novo-MG) also left office after two consecutive terms and signaled that he should be a candidate for President, but has not yet formalized his pre-candidacy.

Nine governors left office and intend to run for a seat in the Senate. They are: Gladson Cameli (PP-AC); Wilson Lima (União-AM), Ibaneis Rocha (MDB-DF), Renato Casagrande (PSB-ES); Mauro Mendes (União-MT); Helder Barbalho (MDB-PA), João Azevêdo (PSB-PB) and Antonio Denarium (PP-RR).
Former governor of Rio de Janeiro Cláudio Castro (PL) also resigned his mandate to run for a seat in the Senate. However, Castro was condemned, last month, to ineligibility until 2030 by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Therefore, he must compete for the position sub judice.
Re-election
Nine governors will run for re-election and can continue in their positions: Clécio Luís (União-AP); Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT-BA); Elmano de Freitas (PT-CE); Eduardo Riedel (PP-MS); Raquel Lyra (PSD-PE); Rafael Fonteles (PT-PI); Jorginho Mello (PL-SC); Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP) and Fábio Mitidieri (PSD-SE).
According to electoral legislation, politicians do not need to leave their positions in the Executive Branch if they intend to run for a second term.
Stay in government
Seven governors decided to complete their term and did not resign to run for office in the elections. They have already served two consecutive terms. They are: Paulo Dantas (MDB-AL); Carlos Brandão (No party-MA); Ratinho Junior (PSD-PR); Fátima Bezerra (PT-RN); Eduardo Leite (PSD-RS), Marcos Rocha (PSD-RO) and Wanderlei Barbosa (Republicanos-TO).
Elections
The first round of elections will be on October 4, when 155 million voters will be able to elect the President of the Republic, the vice-president, governors and state, federal and district deputies.
The second round may be held on October 25th for the positions of president and governor if none of the candidates obtains more than half of the valid votes, which exclude blank and null votes, in the first round.
