Lula talks about ‘reciprocity’ after PF delegate is expelled from the USA

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), stated that he can act with “reciprocity” against the United States after the expulsion of Federal Police (PF) delegate Marcelo Ivo. Speaking to the press outside a hotel in Hannover, Germany, Lula stated that he had been informed this Tuesday morning, the 21st, about the episode.

“If there was American abuse towards our police officer, we will do reciprocity with his in Brazil”, stated the president.

Marcelo Ivo was expelled from the USA on Monday, 20th, a week after the arrest of former federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem, convicted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of attempted coup d’état.

Detained by the US immigration service, ICE, on April 13, the former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) was released two days later. He fled to the US in September last year.

In a statement released by the State Department, the US government alleged that the Brazilian officer tried to “manipulate” the immigration system, “circumventing formal extradition requests” and “extending political persecution into United States territory”.

The Federal Police, on the other hand, reported that Ramagem’s arrest “resulted from international police cooperation” between the PF and US authorities.

“The prisoner is considered a fugitive from Brazilian justice after being convicted of the crimes of armed criminal organization, coup d’état and attempted violent abolition of the rule of law,” stated the PF.
