Accused by 8/1 interrupts Gilmar and declares himself a “political refugee” in Argentina

One of those accused of the attacks on January 8, 2023 in Brasília interrupted the speech of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Gilmar Mendes, this Thursday (6), during the Buenos Aires Forum, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).

The man introduced himself as Simon Castro and claimed to live as a “political refugee” in Argentina. The episode briefly interrupted Gilmar Mendes’ conference, who did not respond to Simon’s statements.

President of the Republicans stated at the Buenos Aires Forum that the Chamber and Senate will accelerate the analysis of public security projects after the crisis in RJ

“There is no evidence against me. We are suffering from the crime. Many committed it, yes, and those who committed it must pay. But not me, Gilmar. You have to have a role. There is no proof that I entered the buildings”, declared Castro, referring to the allegations of participation in the invasion of public buildings in Brasília.

The accused was grateful for being heard at the event. “I’m one of the refugees here in Argentina and I thank you for welcoming me and listening to me. This is true democracy: the power to speak and express yourself”, he said, ending his intervention in the silence of the auditorium.

After the speech, Simon sought out journalists present to introduce himself and denied having committed crimes. “I have a photo with Minister Gilmar Mendes, I’m not a criminal. If I were, I’d be armed. They didn’t search me here. I’m not a terrorist, as Brazil says,” he said.

He declared that he was facing 16 criminal charges, including terrorism and attempting to abolish the Democratic Rule of Law, and stated that he did not have the right to a defense.

“In Brazil there is no right to defense. They simply act and don’t let us defend ourselves, that is the great truth”, he stated.

Since the beginning of the Forum, Brazilians who call themselves “exiles” have been trying to get closer to journalists and event participants to protest against what they call the “STF dictatorship”.
