After denying a blow, Bolsonaro says it will be “the next president of the Republic”

After testifying on Tuesday (10) to the 1st Panel of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) stated, in a publication on social networks, that it came out “quiet and more confident” that he will return to the presidency in 2026. Bolsonaro is a defendant in the criminal action that investigates attempted coup after the 2022 elections.
“I leave the peaceful and more confident court that I will be the next president of the Republic to help take our country out of this mess,” wrote the former president, hours after being heard by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case.

“Head on”
Bolsonaro said he answered “to all questions” asked by Moraes, denying any use of the right to silence. “I did not invoke silence. I did not seek subterfuges. I answered each question with transparency and conviction,” he said. “Those who have the truth as a mate does not fear being questioned – and never bends in the face of injustice.”

According to the defense of the former president, the statement reinforced the absence of elements to configure crime. “It is impossible to consider a blow from the analysis of measures provided for in the Constitution,” said lawyer Celso Vilardi. “The fact is that these measures were rejected, as the president himself explained.”
During his statements, Bolsonaro tried to distance himself from radical supporters who defended undemocratic actions. “There is always crazy that it has the idea of military intervention,” said the former president, in an apparent attempt to disqualify extremist voices around him.
GLO’s meetings and draft
During the interrogation, Bolsonaro confirmed that he met with then -armed commanders – Freire Gomes (Army), Junior Baptista (Aeronautics) and Almir Garnier (Navy) – to discuss the possibility of editing a GLO decree (law and order guarantee), a mechanism provided for in the Constitution. According to him, the theme was treated “within legal limits”, with no intention of subverting the democratic regime.
The meeting mentioned by Bolsonaro took place in December 2022, when undemocratic acts intensified in the barracks. According to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), this meeting and documents prepared around the Alvorada Palace are part of the institutional rupture plan.
Bolsonaro’s speech differs from the version presented by whistleblower Mauro Cid, former president of orders from the former president. In his statement, Cid stated that Bolsonaro received, read and edited a coup draft, removing the party that predicted the arrest of authorities such as Rodrigo Pacheco and STF ministers, leaving only the name of Moraes targeting.
Bolsonaro’s testimony ends the interrogation phase of the eight defendants considered central in the process. Now, defense and prosecution have a deadline to request additional steps before the final allegations phase – a stage before the merits’ judgment.
