Alencar maintains Weverton Rocha, target of the PF, as rapporteur for Messias’ hearing with the STF
The president of the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), Otto Alencar (PSD-BA), decided to keep senator Weverton Rocha (PDT-MA) as rapporteur of Jorge Messias’ hearing at the Federal Supreme Court (STF). According to Alencar, the procedure will follow the regimental procedure: after reading the presidential message at the CCJ, the senators will have a collective view of the process and, afterwards, the hearing will be scheduled.
The decision keeps Rocha in office even after he was the target of search and seizure in December last year, in a new phase of the Federal Police’s Operation Without Discount. The investigation investigates irregularities in association discounts charged to INSS retirees and pensioners.

The government sent the presidential message formalizing the nomination to the Senate, this Wednesday, 1st. Rocha had already signaled that he will present a favorable opinion to Messias, as he understands that the Union’s attorney general “fulfills all the necessary requirements to occupy the position”.
The progress of the process, however, depends on the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), who is responsible for forwarding the nomination to the CCJ and defining the voting calendar. As published by EstadãoAlcolumbre was dissatisfied with Lula after the president publicly announced, during a ministerial meeting on Tuesday, that he would send the name to the Senate without first informing the president of the House. According to allies, he assesses that the nomination is at risk of rejection, given the articulation of the opposition led by senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ).
Members of the government base believe, however, that Messias has the necessary votes to be approved and argue that the vote should take place as soon as possible. The concern is that the electoral calendar and the risk of a denunciation by Daniel Vorcaro, former controller of Banco Master, could make approval in the second half of the year difficult.
