Minister Cármen Lúcia, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), proposed, for the 2026 elections, the creation of electoral brigades for the security of female candidates. The statement took place during a master class at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) last Friday, 24th, with the theme “Violence against women: contemporary challenges and ways to confront it”.

At the time, the minister stated that the initiative would be aimed at situations of imminent risk, functioning as a rapid response mechanism to prevent episodes of violence during the campaign and election.

“That we also create electoral brigades for female candidates, because, if we don’t create them, we will see more and more violence being practiced”, declared the minister.

She explained that the proposal would work in a similar way to the Maria da Penha Patrol, a specialized service of the Military Police or Municipal Guard that monitors compliance with urgent protective measures for women victims of domestic violence. The program carries out periodic visits, offers humanized care and works to prevent and reduce the recurrence of aggression.

“I am proposing, based on my experience as president of the 2024 elections, that we start by creating, as we have the Maria da Penha brigade, which are brigades that are called when a woman is going through a situation of violence and act immediately to avoid the worst outcome”, he stated.

Cármen Lúcia was president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) during the 2024 municipal elections. She anticipated her departure from the position to the 14th of this month, which will be assumed by minister Nunes Marques.

“The election (of 2024) went well. The voters went to vote, they didn’t do what they had to vote for and at night I gave the result, the conversation ended. We want democratic peace, the peace that is balance in the movement with respect for all rights”, said the minister.
