Court rejects case against Trump for election interference in Georgia

After the announcement of the court decision, Trump published on the Truth Social network that “law and justice prevailed in the great state of Georgia.” He described the case as “an illegal, unconstitutional and un-American hoax” that “should never” have been pursued.

In a 23-page document, Attorney Skandalakis referenced a federal investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who dropped his own charges in late 2024 after Trump’s re-election.

“If Special Counsel Jack Smith, with all the resources of the federal government at his disposal (…) concluded that the prosecution would be unsuccessful, then I also consider that, despite the available evidence, pursuing the indictment of everyone involved in the ‘State of Georgia vs. Donald Trump, et al.’ on an essentially federal basis would be equally unproductive”, he stated.

Skandalakis also noted that prosecuting a sitting president in Georgia is almost impossible and that, without the Republican president, the trial would be unfeasible for the other 14 defendants.

Trump and 18 others were charged with illicit association and other crimes in Georgia in 2023 for their alleged efforts to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election in that southern state.

The indictment alleged that there were attempts to persuade state officials to “find” votes to overturn Trump’s narrow defeat to Joe Biden. Four defendants admitted minor crimes.
