Glauber Braga ends hunger strike after agreement with Hugo Motta

Federal Deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ) decided to end his hunger strike, which began over a week ago, after reaching an agreement with the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB).

The agreement foresees a period of 60 days for Glauber to present his defense before the vote in plenary.

The decision was announced on Thursday (17) and occurs amid the advance of the process that can lead to the revocation of the mandate of the parliamentarian.

Glauber Braga began the hunger strike in protest against the progress of the cassation process, which intensified after the recommendation of the House Ethics Council.

Since April 9, the deputy was feeding only on water, serum and isotonic drinks while sleeping at the House facilities.

During the negotiation, Hugo Motta assured that the case would not be submitted to the plenary before the deadline for the defense.

Glauber Braga’s cassation is the result of a complaint filed by the New Party, which accuses him of breaking parliamentary decorum by assaulting and expelling a militant from the House Free Brazil Movement (MBL).

The Ethics Council, at a meeting held on April 8, endorsed the proceedings, which will now be analyzed by the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ).

The CCJ will evaluate if there were illegalities in the process, but will not discuss the content of the prosecution again. If the Commission accepts the appeal, the case will return to the Ethics Council to correct any defects. Otherwise, the process will continue to vote in the plenary, where 257 of the 513 deputies will need to vote in favor of the cancellation for it to occur.
