Haddad says that ‘over there’ is confused and defends a veto on dosimetry
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said that the “side there”, in reference to the opposition to the current government, is “a little confused, to say the least”. “I see erratic movements,” he told reporters. He also cited the high rejection of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and said that pre-candidates try to establish regulatory distance.
“If there’s one thing Bolsonaro has, it’s instinct, in fact, maybe it’s the only thing he has. He realizes that it takes two seconds for him to be raffled off,” he said. And he compared the situation of Bolsonaro – imprisoned since November – to that of Lula, claiming that, when arrested, the PT member aroused the same type of support as when released, because, according to Haddad, Lula represented a project, not a single person.
Haddad told Lula he did not want to be a candidate and should leave government by February
Haddad stated that Lula did not come to him to ask him to be a candidate, with the conversation on the topic coming from the minister himself
Lula: Haddad must be very happy, everything he said he would deliver was delivered
Lula cited tax reform as one of these deliveries, saying that previously this type of change was only made under authoritarian regimes
Regarding candidates from the right-wing camp, he stated that betting on senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) or the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), does not depend on rationality, but “on Bolsonaro’s instinct”.
Asked what the economic theme will be for the 2026 re-election campaign, Haddad replied that it was too early to say.
Dosimetry
Regarding the Dosimetry Bill, which reduces sentences for those convicted on January 8th and benefits former president Bolsonaro, Haddad said that he only learned about the issue at the ministerial meeting on Wednesday, 17th. “From a practical point of view, in my opinion, approval was inevitable by the Senate, based on the accounting we had.”
“I think that this veto, the sooner it comes out, the better. The better for the country’s political agenda”, he said, citing the possibility of judicialization of the issue. “The veto will be overturned, it will be overturned. It will be judicialized, judicialized. In other words, this issue has to be resolved, in my opinion”, he added.
6×1
Regarding the end of the 6×1 scale, Haddad said that Lula believes that this has to be a request from society, in conversations with Parliament and businesspeople. He maintained that “many sectors” already have a 40-hour work week.
“It’s a debate that will take place over the next year, it could become a campaign issue, we’ll see how the political forces will manifest themselves. But I think it’s an agenda that has gained traction”, he stated.
